When compared to the surrounding areas, Franklin County PA has some of the lowest taxes, most affordable housing and best schools. Mercersburg Academy is a private prep school, grades 8 through and 12, housing students from 28 states and 18 countries. The beautiful 330 acre campus is located just blocks from the restaurant, almost in the center of town. The school has graduated Hollywood actors, two of which are Oscar winners, Olympic Athletes, seven Rhodes Scholars and a Nobel Prize winner. The academy adds an international flavor to this very unique town.
Outdoors:
Present-day Mercersburg is surrounded by beautiful foot hills, sprawling farmlands, and vast woodlands. Activities in the area include skiing at Whitetail Ski Resort, just six miles from town; additionally, there are many public golf courses, two of which are rated four stars, Penn National and Black Rock. Other activities include cycling, camping, climbing, hiking, caving, kayaking and fishing in or around any of the many State Parks or National Forests in the area. The region also has a large whitetail deer population, as well as an abundance of wildlife making it a haven for hunters and/or nature enthusiasts alike. Other outdoor areas of interest include the C & O Canal, the Tuscarora Trail, and the famous Appalachian Trail.
